Let’s clear up some common misconceptions about LED lighting and answer some of your frequently asked questions:

You may have heard about LED lighting, your friends, family or neighbours might have already made the change to LED, but what is it all about, and is it the right choice for your home? The answer is probably yes, but read on to find out why.

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode and is a new form of lighting which is safer, cleaner, and more efficient and longer lasting than traditional halogen and fluorescent lighting. LED lights are entirely electronic and do not rely on high temperatures or chemicals to produce light. They don’t produce harmful UV rays or contain mercury or other toxins which are bad for the environment.

Let’s clear up some common misconceptions about LED lighting and answer some of your frequently asked questions:

Q: Will I need to take out another mortgage to change my lights to LED?

A: LED is a bit more expensive to buy than traditional globes. Since you don’t need to replace them as often and they are saving you money on your power bill, they end up paying for themselves. The price of LED globes is slowly decreasing as technology advances and as they become more common in domestic homes.

Q: Do LED lights use the same amount of energy as traditional globe types?

A: No, LED lights use much less power. Approximately 15% the amount of a typical halogen globe, But it will also produce more light! Bonus!

Q: Do LED’s produce a lot of heat?

A: LED lights do produce some heat, but nowhere near as much as halogen globes. They are usually cool to touch but the heat sink (located behind the bulb) will be warm.

Q: Do LED globes last forever?

A: They won’t last forever, however, compared to halogen and fluoro globes, LED’s have a massive lamp life. Depending on the instillation and which brand you buy, they can last for around 80,000+ hours.
